I head to the library and load up on some good books. By reading others, I am inspired. I think to myself, "If I was that character, what would I do instead?" From there I create a mood or a scene, and the next thing I know, I am writing again.

My ideas come from my dreams, literally. In An Education in Murder, I had a dream about a dumpster. I spent the next months creating the characters and story around that one scene.
