I pass the pen over to my characters and let them do the talking/writing. If I don't exactly know what happens next or what a place looks like or what someone is feeling, I ask the character who would know best (sometimes the MC, sometimes the antagonist, sometimes someone else), and I write down what they tell me, in their words. Those words often end up transferred directly into my stories (verb tenses adjusted as needed).

A picture book about a sandwich and a YA fantasy about betrayal. Coincidentally, I do believe I've been betrayed by a sandwich more than once in my life. A weak mustard is often the culprit. (Spoiler: a weak mustard is not the culprit in either of my current WIPs.)

The joy it inspires. Corny, I know, right? But hear me out. There's the quiet, personal joy of crafting words on a page late into the night when the magic is yours alone to tend like a small fire. And then there's the exponential, outward joy of seeing those words alight in the minds of readers, at readings, in messages they send you, in the blaze of art they go on to create and courage they go on to express. Joy multiplied = the best thing about being a writer.
