Kelly J. Mendenhall The human remains found inside of a wall in a home I lived in with my mom and sister for several years. I always swore that place was haunted when we lived there and I’d have terrible nightmares and hallucinations. 20+ years after we lived there we got a call from an old neighbor saying the FBI and a forensic team from UofM were at the old house collecting remains 😳.
Kelly J. Mendenhall That's hard to say, really. I started writing when I was just a girl, seven years old or so. My mom has boxes of stories and poems and papers I wrote dated as far back as third grade. Writing just seems to be something I've always done and wanted to do. I begged for a typewriter for my birthday when I was eight and I actually got one. I would come up with any excuse to type. I think I was the only child at Pierce Elementary School in Flint, Michigan that typed her homework. I even voluntarily wrote a paper on the Bill of Rights and entered a contest with it during third or fourth grade.

In my professional career, before becoming medically disabled, I wrote grants for fundraising purposes for different nonprofit organizations and home studies to certify therapeutic foster parents. I always found some way to write but my heart was never as settled or satisfied as it is when I am writing creatively.
Kelly J. Mendenhall I had been thinking for years that someone should create a coffee table style book with photographs of tattoos and the stories attached to them. I thought of this back when I was working at a tattoo shop at the age of 17. More recently, in 2017 when I became medically disabled and unable to work outside the home, inspiration struck while I was eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the couch. I suddenly exclaimed, "I'm going to write a book! It's going to be called 'The Stories My Tattoos Tell!'" I got up the next day and started writing.
