William D. Lopez Powerful person: “You can save the world if you remember your travelocity password and log in on the first try.”
Me: [RIP World]
William D. Lopez My book focuses on an immigration raid, a frequently used method of immigration law enforcement that the public knows very little about. The idea to share this story widely came mostly from the intensity of the stories shared with me. I believed the public needs to know these storie, and those who shared them deserved that those outside of their communities know what it’s like to experience an immigration raid.
William D. Lopez Tap into every quality you e ever found burdensome in your life. Feel too much? Think too much? Empathize too much? Use it write about it and with it.

And I’ll give specific advice for writers of color or writers from other marginalized groups (like lgbt folks whether white or of color). People NEED your stories. People need to understand the world from a different point of view. Be fueled by your passion to make your community’s experience known.
William D. Lopez I rarely need inspiration to write. There are more stories of love and struggle, of bravery and compassion, of innovation and resiliency, than could ever be written. The world knows too few of these stories. Our job as writer is simply to document the beauty that’s already there, and there are overwhelming number of stories to document.
William D. Lopez I’m gathering data from folks who respond to large scale immigration work raids. I’m hoping community responses to work raids is the topic of Book 2.
William D. Lopez Goodness. I read so much end-of-world fiction I wouldn’t want to travel to any of those worlds!
William D. Lopez Ha! I feel very lucky in that I always have more to write in my head than I have time to write. So generally, I rarely have writer’s block. Mostly though, I’ve come to accept that the writing ratio of total time per time written is not what you expect. It takes me five hours to write for three, meaning I have to block off five hours to make three happen. We all wish we were more efficient but it is what it is.
