I think every story you consume influences how you craft your own stories, and there are quite a few, on the screen and on the page, that I've felt hardcore, for better or for worse. Certain books I turn back to again and again as places of comfort -- like Good Omens, Trickster's Queen, Howl's Moving Castle, A String in the Harp -- all laid a foundation. For Crownchasers in particular, I think I felt the impact of a lot of onscreen stories as well, like Star Wars, the Fifth Element, Buffy (the TV series). I seem to gravitate toward stories that take you down into a pit, literally or metaphorically, and then find a way to help you laugh about being down there, and I strive to provide that same mix of humor and darkness in my own works.
