Since I announced the publication of "Go Down the Mountain," I've been hearing from descendants of the people who lost their homes to the park. Many have sent photos of their family members and thanked me for telling their stories. Hearing from them has been the best thing about writing this book.

I used to take our Labrador Retriever Riley for long walks and think about plot and character development. He was an old guy and has since passed away, but our new setter puppy is growing into a good walking and brainstorming companion.

I fell in love with Shenandoah National Park as a girl riding piggyback on my Dad's shoulders, but it wasn't until I was an adult that I came across ruins of old homesteads there. I was immediately intrigued by the people who came before the park and what happened to them when the government took their land in the 1930s. My novel is inspired by their stories.
