When thinking about what I wanted to write about, I remembered hearing that you should write about what you know. I was a team leader for 20 years and I loved learning about leadership and how to be a better team leader. I read books and participated in trainings and implemented what I learned. I found what worked and what didn't work. When I decided to write a book on team leadership, I reflected back on my experience leading teams and focused on the key concepts that I felt really worked to create engaged productive and high-performing teams.

Just do it! Often people think of writing a book as a mountain and very overwhelming. Instead, if you can think of it in terms of small hikes added up over time. Just take one step at a time or one page at a time. Write at least 30 minutes a day and as long as you make daily progress, you will eventually complete your book.

I love being my own boss and setting my own schedule. I also get to be location independent, which means I can work from anywhere in the world. This is great because I love to travel. My last trip was to Thailand and I was there for two months. I still got a lot done on my book.

As a non-fiction writer, I have not had issues with writer's block. For my book, From Supervisor to Super Leader, I create a mindmap and a chapter outline. Then for each chapter, I did another mindmap and detailed outline. That way, I knew exactly what I needed to focus my writing on. Sometimes, I would grab an audio recorder and just start talking outloud my thoughts on a particular topic, then I would transcribe the audio and then edit to an organized section.
