Alexia Swanepoel No! I am a horrific horror story writer, but Shirley Jackson is brilliant. If you haven't read her, please do so.
Alexia Swanepoel Some writers are very dedicated and literally write every single day. I do not. I will go for days or weeks at a time and write absolutely nothing and then suddenly an idea will form in my head and it is like a stack of dominoes. Before I know it, I have written several poems or a story or two. Usually it is a dream or something truly simple that becomes the platform for a poem. I don't always know myself where it is going to take me. The journey is just as much a surprise for me as a writer as it is for you as a reader.
Alexia Swanepoel I get to work from home yet the entire world inspires me to write. That might sound cliche, but it can be the smallest thing that will lay the entire platform for a poem or short story.
Alexia Swanepoel The death of my sister and others like her following their discharge from the local hospital due to the flu. Several of the parents sued the doctor.
Alexia Swanepoel I either take a monitored break from writing and instead listen to more music or watch more TV. That will always give me the breakthrough I need.
Alexia Swanepoel I would love to go to Hogwarts and be one of the teachers there.
Alexia Swanepoel I have always been a reader. I run a local book club for women so last year by goal was to read 50 books. This year by goal is to read 55 books. I don't have genre restrictions so I don't have a list of books to read this summer, but I am a huge Shirley Jackson fan and I really wanted to read it last summer. I finally read it last fall.
Alexia Swanepoel The book has a compilation of poems written before 1997 and in the past two years. It also has a short story that I wrote back in 2000. After several rewrites and edits, it is the story it is today.
Alexia Swanepoel Find a group of fellow writers who will give you feedback on your work. If you can't find a group, start one.
Alexia Swanepoel I am working on another book of poetry with my dear friend Avian Skye. Anticipate this book to be published within the next twelve months.
