It's complicated, but I do explain in the foreword how I came to write The Mother of the Brontës. Essentially, I could not understand why no-one had ever told the life story of this remarkable woman, Regency lady of letters, lover of Patrick and mother of genius. Mrs Brontë has been a bit of a mystery for almost 200 years. I wanted to finally bring her out of the shadows of her daughters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë. Maria had a big life before she had a big family - and her impact on her remarkable children is there to see.

Writing (and reading) gives me joy - and I use that word carefully. Also, it is an urge. Just as some people love to cook or paint or perform, I love to write. It's when I feel most 'myself'. Most writers understand what Charlotte Brontë meant when she said: "I'm just going to write because I cannot help it."

I have to be honest, I've never suffered from this. I think it might be to do with being a journalist, writing to deadlines for years. Nonfiction, in many ways, is like having a gloriously large word count to write the most interesting feature... the problem is more often finding enough time to finish rather than getting started. I am very focussed when writing and only stop when I'm tired, really.
