A woman’s life is a-mystery-a-day, am a right? For me, the first PJ Santini book, “Hell On Heels”, was inspired by events in a certain newsroom that included information stored on a reporter’s computer. You can imagine the possibilities. It’s not unusual to see a fired employee being escorted out the door by a burly security guard with one hand on the employee’s arm and the other hand cradling the guy’s hard drive.

I’m a big fan of Cold War spy stories, especially the Quiller series written by Adam Hall (Elleston Trevor). I’d love to talk with Quiller at a caffe’ in Berlin, learn from him, understand his thought process. He always works alone. Quiller isn’t even his own name.
Not like PJ Santini, who’s a capable, tough broad, but knows she has a lot to learn and doesn’t mind getting it from her worldly, handsome, hot boss, Tango Daly, over a meal of cheap Chinese food from Wei To Go.

When you’re working out in a gym, your mind is free to wander if you’ll give it a chance, take out the ear pods, and not watch TV. There’s a book plot almost everywhere you look. One particular aspect of the gym in the 3rd P book, LOVE HEELS!, is true to my life... it really did happen.
Another aspect of the book involves certain things that happen to women.
As for references to Italy... and family... and food, that’s my Italian half running away with my Italian imagination. I swear, I really can feel my thighs expanding when we sit down for the pasta!

Truth really is stranger than fiction. Everywhere you look, there’s a story! And after decades in the news business - local, and those 33,000+ CNN Headline Newscasts - and years as a Deputy, plus 3 1/2 marriages, well, the things I’ve seen, you can’t make that shit up!

It’s great fun to live vicariously through my characters! Although I do admit that certain of PJ Santini’s experiences MIGHT bear some resemblance to my own. Not sayin’ which ones. And then there are the times when she can get away with saying something that would have gotten me slapped down if I’d tried it!

Write what you know, and listen to yourself. Constantly make notes of your ideas. On a piece of paper in your purse, or an email to yourself in your phone, or on a restaurant napkin. One day you will sit on the floor and spread them all around you and you will realize you have a book.

I’ve never experienced writer’s block. Or, unfortunately, eater’s block. Or talker’s block. All three seem to be unrestrained activities for me! In other words, women do have so much in common. 😉

Summer is over, but reading goes on. I’m just finishing David Brinkley‘s “Washington Goes To War”. Entertaining and factual, it’s a fascinating look at how the sleepy southern town called Washington morphed into what it is today, and the people from all over the world who made it happen.

I’m currently working on PJ4, the working title of the fourth book in the PJ Santini series. It’s early in the book and already she’s in trouble. So are her shoes.

My third marriage. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
