Motivation for "The Music Makers" eminates from the summer of 2024 when I began keeping (and adding to) a list of possible ways that Donald Trump could shatter various democratic traditions and safeguards if re-elected. As Trump 2.0 unfolded, and these signs of unchecked autocracy began to materialize, I began writing a book, set in the East Berlin of 1989, to show how suffocating life can be for ordinary people when autocracy actually takes hold and is inevitably followed by dictatorship. I tried to make it any easy read for the millions of cellphone addicts who recoil at anything longer than an email. It's also a warning that history can repeat itself if the people of today have little or no memory of the past.
