Will go to publisher in 2024. In the meantime, I have published short anecdotes about Philippine values on my Blog www.victoriahoffarth.com

I am working on my 3rd book about Philippine Cultural Values. These are story-based explorations on the functions and dysfunctions of Philippine culture, presuming we as a country would like to join the ranks of more developed nations. Cultures evolve, meaning to say they change extremely slowly; meantime, what can we do to preserve these “good” values whilst addressing those that are not very helpful?

I have always been interested in writing because I liked reading. When I was about 13 years old, I confided to my father that I wanted to win a Nobel Prize in literature--would like to write a-la-Harriet Beecher Stowe and expose the injustices in the sugar industry in my province. My father told me that I was too young to understand these complicated issues, why didn’t I concentrate on my homework so that I could later be financially self-reliant? I adored my father and followed his advice. Fifty years later, I am retired with enough money tucked under my bed. It is time I follow my dreams--perhaps no longer to win a Nobel Prize, but to do what I enjoy doing.

My most recent book was SONG OF NEGROS. Although I am not a mythographer, I have always been interested in Myths. So when I met a couple of researchers who had interviewed a lot of older people in the hinterlands of my Philippine province of Negros, and was told they had heard stories that would disappear shortly unless they were documented, I was intrigued. These researchers simply needed a bit of funding. That led me to embark on the project.

Follow your dreams. Never mind your doubts and insecurities--if you want to write, write! You develop your craft through practice--never mind following a set of rigid rules. Only through practice do you find your true voice.
