It feels a little early to be thinking of summer, but I've got some great non fiction that I'd like to read over the coming months:
1. I'll Drink to That by Betty Halbreich
2. The Art of Frugal Hedonism by Adam Grubb and Annie Raser-Rowland
3. A Spy's Guide to Strategy by John Braddock

Rise of One came to me as I was playing the zombie survival game, 7 Days To Die.
I'm a huge gamer, particularly of open world/survival/crafting games, and 7 Days To Die really replicates the isolating, hopeless, and scavenging elements of a post apocalyptic life.
And so I asked myself, if a vampire drinks from people, and all people become infected as zombies, what are the vampires to do?
I also wanted to explore the themes of a claustrophobic family environment, of dealing with their 'crabs in a bucket' mentality while facing terrible odds.
Rise of One is the first book in the Blood Brute series, publishing May 2020.

I don't really believe in writer's block - it's just a sign that you're tired, that the 'creative well' needs to be mixed about a bit and refilled.
How to deal? Just give it time, have patience. Stories and characters come to you for a reason - they'll be back.

You need to find *how* you're going to achieve your goals.
Realising that 90% of writing is going easy on yourself enough to allow the words of the story to come down onto the page. You can always edit them later, but tell the story first.
Write small stories alongside big stories. The small stories level you up. The big ones prove those smaller lessons.

I think it's key to *record* all of those little flashes of inspiration and the turns of phrases / images that pop into your head.
Record them all, either in hardcopy or online/your phone. If you ever feel you lack inspiration, you've a ready-made fountain of ideas that you may have forgotten about - when these ideas start melding together, even more inspiration often strikes!

Literally yesterday I sent my fourth SciFi short story off to my editor - I expect it to be out for submission early next year.
After achieving that goal for December, I am now back to finishing the final draft of my debut novel, RISE OF ONE - which is about vampires trying to survive a zombie apocalypse - releasing early next year, too!

I would go straight to Tolkien's Shire and I'm not sure I'd ever leave!

The very best thing about being a writer is that you give home to all those stories and universes that churn about in your brain!

"Why don't we go around the room and everybody tell us about themselves? Dixon, you go first!"
