I normally put myself in a familiar place and write from that angle. It could be a picnic, working out, taking a trip, or something else mundane. I begin to write from that perspective and tie it into the character. This works for the most part.

I guess it would be the same question for a painter, musician, athlete, etc. It's just in me, and keeping it bottled up feels wrong. Some words just want to be let out. And those words have to convey a connection to the emotion.

Life experiences mostly. I know all of us have a story to tell regarding coming-of-age, but not all of us some experiences are sweet while others are bitter. I wanted to be the voice for the latter.
