Georgia Coffman Right now, my biggest piece of advice is to focus on writing. It's hard not to get distracted and sucked into thinking that you have to know everything about marketing and publishing. YES, those are so important, but when you're just getting started, writing should be the main focus, in my opinion. Take time to work on your craft and create a compelling story that you're proud of. If you don't have a quality product, you'll have nothing to market and publish.
Also - be sure to stop and celebrate the progress you make along the way. Don't forget to have fun and pat yourself on the back. You're doing awesome with every little step you take forward, even if it doesn't always feel like it.
Georgia Coffman Once, I accidentally shaved off the middle part of my eyebrow. It was an hour before family pictures.
Georgia Coffman Freedom to be creative, especially with first drafts. I enjoy the beginning stages of writing a novel the most. It's when I can be really creative and write anything and insert various (crazy) plot twists before I edit and cut back on what I later decide truly is insanity. In general, using words to create whole new worlds and characters - it's really exciting and fulfilling.
Georgia Coffman I actually don't fully believe in writer's block (GASP - I know). For me, when I'm feeling like I can't write or like I'm not inspired, it's usually because I'm so distracted by things going on in my life, whether it's book/publishing related or daily struggles. To help me focus and rid myself of my cluttered mind, I go to the gym to lift weights or go to my living room and do some yoga. This helps settle my nerves and gets me more focused to write!
Georgia Coffman I read so many great books this summer. One of my top favorites was On the Rocks by Kandi Steiner. It is a small-town, forbidden, angsty romance heaven! I had actual tears in my eyes once I reached the end. I hated that it was over, yet I was so content with the story.
Georgia Coffman This is a hard one... There are times when I make myself brainstorm and literally write down anything that comes to mind without thinking too hard. Eventually I write down an idea that's worth exploring. A fun game I like to play that's along the same lines is trying to come up with intriguing first lines and see where the story takes me from there. Other times, ideas hit me just by being in a cool place or environment. Even the energy in a bar or restaurant can inspire me for a whole story. These are just a few ways, but really anything can inspire me.
Georgia Coffman I passed by a billboard while driving, and it gave me the idea. That's all I'll say for now ;)
Georgia Coffman Currently polishing up Strip for Me, Book 1 in the Naked Heat series, before I send it off for formatting. I'm also working on the second draft of Book 2 - more details to come!
