Well—if you don’t count the scribblings from growing up—I am working on my first novel. It has been an exciting project—full of all the things that thrill me: deep characters, wild lands, and plenty of opportunities for conflict! With a few poems tucked in between the prose. It would be an understatement to say a lot of thought has gone into this thing—and a lot of prayer.

It can be easy to see the flaws in others work and give good advice, but it can be very difficult to see the flaws in our own work and take good advice from others.
If we would all step back sometimes and look at our stories as though they were written by a good friend—someone whom we would give kind but honest words—we could go farther as writers. The journey is taken step by step, but there is a reason travelers carry a map. Look at now; look at later. See where you are so you can get to where you want to go!
And take good counsel; mentor characters aren’t just fictional props!

I take those blocks and build a castle.
….Or I smash them to gravel and build roads through imaginary worlds.
Sometimes I will draw, because it helps me to envision my worlds and characters more vividly; sometimes I will make collages of photos that are relevant to my work; sometimes I will flip through the books on my shelf, because seeing them motivates me to keep pressing forward on my own.
Ultimately, though, I just have to sit down and make myself write. Word by word, I hammer away at that block, until it burst into smithereens.

This has to be one of the most popular fictional tourist destinations—thus so much for originality on my part: Middle Earth!
Lothlorien to be exact. It is one of the most imagination-stirring settings in Lord of the Rings! Plus, a very serene, quiet retreat….
I wouldn’t turn up a chance to visit Rivendell either. :)
