Jill Sim I haven't had a problem with finding new material to write, but I will procrastinate when I am working on a project that has become troublesome (for whatever reason). So, I put a clock on the writing session. I force myself to work on a problematic section for just five minutes, with the idea that I can scrap or revise anything I've added. Usually after the five minutes my brain wants to continue.

In the main, I am fortunate I get to write at all, and understand, given every book and every script will take at least twice as long to write as I think they will at onset, that I will never get to all of the things I want to write in this short life. So, best get cracking.
Jill Sim The deep satisfaction of discovering the exact right word for the occasion, and crafting a sentence that thrills every time I read it (this is rare). The hours are very good. The pay is good when you get it.
Jill Sim It takes a certain disposition to sit for hours, alone in a room, writing, day after day, year after year, with no guarantees a single person outside the room will love or even admire the result. But, if that's how you feel you must spend your time, then you must also do it and keep going. Make writing your daily practice. Read great books. Keep going!
Jill Sim A non-fiction chronicle about my family, from slavery to whiteness.
Jill Sim I have always been inspired to write, but that doesn't mean what I write is always good. Five fat novels of mine will never see the light of day, and that's a very good thing.
Jill Sim "The Bondswomen" is an expansion of a screenplay I wrote, entitled "Passengers," that took top three in the UCLA screenwriting competition. Both projects were the result of many years of research into my family's African American heritage.
