I am a second-grade teacher in Saginaw, MI. About 5 years ago, I had a class that seemed to devour pencils. I had sharpened 30 pencils at the beginning of the morning and by 9:15, all the pencils were gone. In frustration, I said, "Second graders are pencil eaters!" My students laughed and the idea stuck.
