Michele Gorman The idea for The Confetti Pact, my latest romcom about a woman who needs a groom and a man who needs a residence visa, is based on my own experience of being an immigrant.

I've lived in the UK for 21 years now (I was born and raised in the US), and when I first came, I was put on a work visa by my company. Little did I know (until it was due to expire) that it was the wrong visa for the job I was doing. When it looked like I might have to leave the life I'd built in London, I did consider marrying my then-boyfriend in order to stay (which would have been a big mistake!) Luckily, my company admitted that they'd put me on the wrong visa, and because it wasn't me who had broken the rules, Home Office allowed me to transfer on to the correct visa. I'm now a British citizen (as well as an American one!) and that experience has really stuck with me. It makes me extremely sensitive and sympathetic to the many issues that immigrants face, especially now with the horrid deportations happening in the UK, and the precarious position of foreign nationals after Brexit. I know first-hand how desperate it feels to face leaving the country you love, and what I would have done to stay.
