Yes, but not always in the obvious way. I grew up in the East and lived in the Midwest before settling here. Each of these regions is distinct and has left indelible marks on my writing. The big impact for me however is that I'm not really a desert dweller. When I look out the window, I would rather see the ocean. Or a forest. Or a lake. Or anything but a cactus. So my characters get to enjoy the locations I'd rather be in rather than where I am. I escape my surroundings in my writing.
