Andrew Huff Hey, Sarah! Thanks for reaching out. The Task Force Phantom series was unfortunately put on hold, but that doesn't mean it might not see the light of day. I'm working on some exciting new things in the world of John Cross, so we'll see what happens!
Andrew Huff I actually did not have any further plans for Agent Lee Armstrong, but he was so much fun to write I should probably consider it! One thing I've seen other authors do is write short stories with spin-off characters and then give those stories away. I'll consider doing that kind of thing with Armstrong for sure!
Andrew Huff RESEARCH! Writer's block isn't an obstacle, it's an opportunity. When I can't think of how to write something, that's often when I will dive back into research until I find something that inspires me. Sometimes I'll spend more time researching similar scenes/stories until the idea shakes loose than I actually do writing the scene, but only because once I've got it it flows pretty quick.
Andrew Huff My favorite thing about being a writer is the freedom in storytelling. It's not only a freedom for me to dream up new ideas, but also a freedom in sometimes letting the story tell itself. Its an amazing feeling to be writing a scene only for a character to come alive, take over, and change directions in a way you didn't expect.
Andrew Huff There's really only two things you need to do: 1) study about writing, and 2) WRITE. I can't tell you how important it was that I spent the time reading about how to write fiction (Rivet Your Readers with Deep Point of View by Jill Elizabeth Nelson, Characters & Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card, The Fire in Fiction by Donald Maass, just to name a few) as well as taking courses in the craft (mostly through involvement with the American Christian Fiction Writers). But its also really just true that you can't learn how to write without actually sitting down to do it. A Cross to Kill is actually the second complete novel I've written, the first not ready to actually be published. I had to learn how to do it writing the first, then write the one that actually had a chance!
Andrew Huff I just finished the developmental edits on Book 2 of the Shepherd Suspense series. I will begin writing Book 3 soon, but I've also got my eye on a potential follow up series. I'm also very interested in writing screenplays. The screen adaptation of A Cross to Kill is almost a certain, but I've got other ideas brewing too.
Andrew Huff As with most of my story ideas, I'm usually influenced by real life events. For my debut thriller, A Cross to Kill, the opening scene is reminiscent of actual journalist executions captured on video several years ago. For my second novel being published, the genesis of the storyline is related to a fascinating article about a lesser known event in our nation's history (no spoilers! :)). Sometimes real life is stranger than any fiction I could invent!
