I do not recognize writer's block as an issue. OOPS. I realize I can be blocked in the beginning of a project. If that happens I sit and feel my fear, light a candle, and try to be as gentle with myself as possible.
If I am not writing I realize I may need more down/nourishing time, I may need to get more information or exploration of what I am writing about, or my unconscious may need more time to figure it out and a break is necessary.

I had just finished producing, choreographing, and directing my play "Skeleton Woman: A Dance with the Dark". The play was about the dark times in our lives and I was so gratified that it had touched, affirmed, and helped people grapple with past and serious present issues. But ironically, I was now in another "dance with the dark myself." I was exhausted, empty, and depressed.
I made myself go out on long walks every day. I told myself I did not need to know what I was doing next. I would just walk in the country and refurbish.
One night after several months I was sitting in the bathtub struggling to get out: the first poem just arrived. A week later the second poem showed up. More poems kept arriving. After several more months I realized a poetry book was creating itself. It was just happening and all I had to do was listen and reach for my pencil every time I was tapped on the shoulder. This became my total preoccupation for a year.
