Discovery! By far, the most rewarding part of telling any story is watching the characters take the pen from your hands. I have come to feel like more a conduit for my stories than their creator. Every time this happens, I know the manuscript is on the right track, and I try to stay as hands-off until the plot hits an obstacle that needs to be manually removed.
Beyond the immediate joy associated with the act of writing, investing in the telling of stories is an investment in the human heart. It's an investment in my own understanding of myself and of others, and my hope is always that my readers will find some insight into their experiences and hearts as well.
