Franklin smiled at his wife and son, then left through the front door. As he got into his car, he wondered how far gone their corpses would be when he returned home.

I grab a cup of coffee and think about how short life is. Then I contemplate the ease with which life can decide to get rid of me. Over the next hour, I look at all the various ways people have died over the last week, allowing myself to get paranoid beyond belief. I am now terrified enough to not leave the house for the day, but equally inspired to write about something macabre. Not sure if this method would help someone write the best college memoir or a Wild West smut novel, but it does wonders for horror. Of course, other times I just write a really shitty draft over the course of a few hours, then dig through it the next day to find whatever substance might be hidden inside.
