(view spoiler)[For most of my life I was looking everywhere for self-esteem, courage and confidence. What I was really doing was masking my shame and cowardice with material items and by earning accolades rather than being my authentic self. I was afraid of not just who I was, but who I wasn't. I was so scared of life it would take 5-6 beers to drag me onto an airplane. I was terrified to fly.
I contracted a very rare form of leukemia and everything changed.
I realized I had wasted my life by running from fears I created. I had to change; not for me but for my family and loved ones. When my motivation changed I discovered courage. I became a commercial pilot and now compete in acrobatics.
I needed to find out why and how that amazing transformation took place. Flying became a great joy and yet it had been locked away from me for 35 years because of fear. I wondered if other people could free themselves from the same shackles of fear. That curiosity led me to interview the world's top neuroscientists. After the second or third interview I realized there was a book that needed to be written and the science had to be shared in a way that could help people learn courage and confidence without going through a near-death experience.
