Great question Keahe, listening and being caring and supportive are key. I try to always remember the role Santa plays in interactions, so remaining true to it. If I really have trouble maintaining composure, I bite the inside of my cheek in order to keep in character. Often my true emotions take over when I’m back in street clothes in my car.

Thanks for your question. I'm sure it was on the minds of lots of people during the holidays. I found the hardest part was staying apart from children who just wanted a hug from Santa, something that occurs very, very often. Masking was ok although it was hard for kids to hear Santa especially when 6 feet apart. Losing your voice after a full day was typical. Wearing gloves helped with that aspect of the role but you needed to change them out and wash daily. Changing out suits and deep cleaning due to the fabric was also important. The whole experience was a challenge but you do what you have to do to keep the spirit of the season alive for children. Everyone did their part to keep things safe and still fun.

Thanks for your questions Keahe - The best # I was able to pull together is about 900 or so volunteer appearances during the 25 years. The average was 40, highest was 72, I did all of the appearances on my two days off. before and after work hours plus a few PTO days. With women's & children's shelters and fire shelters I was able to do 3/4 per day. I did my best to fulfill all of my work obligations and the volunteer work. Sometimes I look back and I'm not sure how it all came together! Be well & stay well.
