Matilda Swift As an English person, I can't resist witty dialogue or a bit of sarcasm when the situation calls for it. The humour in my books comes from character interactions rather than any absurd situations.
Matilda Swift In my series so far, all the animals have been realistic pets. In fact, Madame Poirot and Miss Marple from the Parchment Paper Mysteries are based on my own cats, who can't talk as far as I know.

I am currently working on a new series that's set somewhere slightly different, and which will have talking animals, including one who's already snuck into another series without speaking!
Matilda Swift No, my sleuths are focused on their friendships, and these tight-knit bonds are what help them solve the mysteries they face.
Matilda Swift I think the community is what really makes a cozy mystery - the world of the stories should always be a place you want to return to as your safe harbour. I keep my books as cozy as I can, so there's nothing that might pull you out of the story. I want readers to enjoy following the mystery along with their favourite amateur sleuth, who juggles visits to quaint tea shops, plenty of baking, and adventures with their best friend alongside solving the mystery.
Matilda Swift I love to share the recipes for the cakes that are made in my books. In my Parchment Paper Mysteries, I include two recipes per book - both are traditional English bakes, and one is specifically from the books' Yorkshire setting. In a past series, I've created a short story collection with a recipe to pair with each one, and I like to share recipes in my reader newsletter too.
