What do you think was behind TPLF's plan to oversell Tedros Adhanom to the position of DG of WHO in the first place in 2017? The TPLF is not known for letting its high ranking members (even those it has once imprisoned) go independent, is it?
David Steinman Selam Kassahun, and thanks for your interesting question. A DG of WHO is very influential. A TPLF member in that position could: 1) help the TPLF maximize the help available from that public health agency, 2) help the TPLF cover up its healthcare mismanagement, 3) promote the EPRDF's international image and access to powerful people and institutions, and 4) do favors for other countries that those countries would repay to the TPLF. Examples of this influence might include, 1) lobbying on behalf of the TPLF for international support during the recent law enforcement operation, 2) downplaying the Wuhan Covid outbreak for China, 3) appointing Mugabe to a WHO goodwill ambassadorship, and 4) classifying a 2017 Sudanese cholera outbreak as acute watery diarrhea. I imagine a lot more happened behind the scenes we don't know about.
