The kind I sometimes have is realizing the idea I have to start a project is not a very good one. But journalism taught me that not-so-good is still better than nothing, so I go ahead and write. I can go back later and polish up a poor beginning, but I often find that it really was much better than I expected, and only needs a tweak here or there.

Originally wanted to write about a character named "Really Big Ben" and invented a charismatic and principled small-town lawman to wear that name. Then I invented the supporting characters, teen-agers Stony and Jack, who grew into the main characters. But Ben remains important to the story.
