I have read quite a few "survival" style fiction novels/series and while they are good, none have any characters with flaws. There are the usual stereotypical flaws to be sure, but no one seems to have asthma or the main character is a former Green Beret/Marine sniper, type. I tend to focus on the family and bond they have to survive, while also trying to help their friends and neighbors.
My idea for the next book entails the Hawkins family dealing with the immediate aftermath of the EMP. Dealing with surviving day to day while teaching and helping their neighbors to do the same.

For me, I dive into a good book and let my mind wander. Sometimes it's just a good piece of classical music and a cup of coffee. If it is a real tough block, then I focus writing something completely different from my current novel. Sometimes it is enough to open the blockage and allow me to get back to work!

I am astounded at the overwhelming positive reception my novel received from family and friends! I wrote it just for me and but the encouragement I have received is pushing me on to write more and more. I have even had scouts ask to be in the next book!

I get this question and another about finding the time to write together. My answer to both is this: Make the time. I find that some days I write only a page or two. While other days I am able to pound out ten to twenty! The only other thing I could recommend is to start with an outline first. Nothing fancy, just a beginning, middle and end, then fill in the blanks!

I like to sit outside on my deck and listen to the sounds of nature. It tends to clear my mind and allow the book to come to life! I love it after it rains! The smells and sounds really get the creative juices going!

I am currently working Book 2 of the Hawkins Family Series. It will be set immediately after the events of Book 1 and will take the family through the next few months after the Event.
