Kevin King Daydreaming. I had a job with lots of down time and nothing else to do, so I spent a lot of time daydreaming.
It started as a question - what if a whole race of people were cursed, but a side effect of the curse gave them a powerful ability. Only they didn't see it as powerful, because they are so ashamed of being cursed they are blind to anything good.
Then I pictured what kind of curse that might be, and how it might happen, and the dramatic conclusion that it might lead to. The climax was the first scene I thought of.
Kevin King By reading, and daydreaming.
I daydream in stories. Some of them turn out to have potential.
Kevin King I'm currently working on a prequel to this novel, that gives the history of the Adoël and how they became cursed. It is also the backstory for the antagonist.

Join a good critique group, one that points out weaknesses and helps you figure out how to fix them. Then listen to how they critique each other and learn from that too.
Write. Write terrible stories, then work to make them better.
If you want it to just be a hobby, that's fine. You don't have to push yourself to be a bestseller. But if you want to be a bestseller, keep writing and improving your skills until it happens.
