It was actually inspired by a tabletop board game idea I had. The game would be a territory-control game where your chosen race would need to occupy three religious sites. These two races, the light and the dark, would battle for control so they could resurrect their deity. A third faction would try to stop them but could be influenced by the other two factions in certain scenarios. When I was trying to formulate the backstory for this board game, the short stories/novellas were born!
