Alas, summer has come and gone and I can't do much about that. I was writing over the summer, so tended to shy away from novels. When you're writing who needs to be reminded of all the great writers out there? I did slip up and relent and read 'Stories of Your Life and Others' by Ted Chiang. A superlative collection of short stories, so good at its height it was like reading electricity. Oh, why do I torture myself so?

I leave my desk and vow never to return. I stick my head out of the window and tell the world 'I'm done with this shit.' I do so in hushed tones, mindful of not disturbing any passers-by. Then, after an indecently elongated period of time, I decide to do something positive with my life and go for a haircut or empty the dishwasher and wonder what Sam Mendes might do.
