Steven Stoll I wanted to write something about peasant cultures in the United States--to argue that there WERE peasants here and what a peasant is. I also wanted to say something about how we think about progress, meaning Historical Progress. So my obsessions all came together in this story about Appalachia and its settlers and how they lost their land.

I hope Ramp Hollow helps readers to understand a vast and complicated region of the country. If you want to know about the history of capitalism, the early United States, and the way people lived in the southern mountains, you'll like spending time reading Ramp Hollow.
Steven Stoll What I love most of all is using language to explain how the world works and light up a story about the past. I also like producing something that's all mine and that takes shape over time.
Steven Stoll I've heard of it but I don't really understand it. I think it comes from not knowing where a story is going. If a writer knows where things will end up, more or less, than he or she should be able to start down that road.
