It depends but normally in my own worlds (in my imagination) that where developed with the books I've read, in the characters I create playing theater or playing role games or just listening a song and letting my mind fly.

Read a lot, write every day, ask for opinion. When all your beta readers says your books are awesome look for people who can show you things to improve about your writing. And always trust yourself, your stories deserve to be read.
