Researching the subject of my next book. (No title yet)

I find inspiration everywhere. The trick is to capture the idea before it fades. For example, sometimes a perfect line of dialogue or insight into a character will come to me in that hazy time between sleep and fully waking up. I used to keep a notebook on my nightstand, but now I use a voice-activated recorder because it's the easiest way to capture it without breaking the spell.

My non-spoilery answer is that I grew up reading mysteries and thrillers, yet I never read a book with a Native American protagonist until I was a senior in high school. So I wanted to write the Indigenous Nancy Drew story I wished I had read growing up.
