When I get writer's block, I'll take a break from writing for a few days. This will give my mind a chance to relax and get rid of all the distractions. I'll throw myself into activities I enjoy. Then I'll go back to my story after resting.

I love the creativity as a writer. I never know where the story is going to go. I have an idea of what's going to happen but I'm always taken by surprised when a character pops up and takes the story in a completely different direction or becomes a main character.

I've always enjoyed a good story. The stories come to me. I can see them like a movie playing in my mind, I can hear the characters speaking. Usually I'm racing to get it on paper. I have notebooks everywhere in case something comes to me. Or I'll run to the computer to write it down before I lost it.

I am currently reading banned and controversial books, which usually end up as classics years later. Right now, I'm reading Native Son by Richard Wright.

I'm adopted and my birth mom had me when she was 15. When I was 13, I thought what would have happened had she decided to keep me? This lead me to write the rough draft that year. Initially, it was entirely from Marisa's perspective since I was a teenager. As I became an adult, the plot and characters such as John, Lisa, and Danny developed. This novel has been developed over many years.

4 things. 1) Read. Read everyday. Doesn't matter what you read, Just read. 2) Write. You have to practice. Make time for it. Keep a journal and write. The great thing is no one will read it so the freedom is endless. You can write whatever you want. There's so much joy and power in keeping a journal with you. 3) Join a writer's group. Meet with fellow writers to get your work critiqued and receive great feedback. 4) Never give up! You have to be persistent. You have to want to write for yourself. You have to love it and be passionate about it. Never stop.
