What is your favorite bird? (bird watchers unite!)

Christopher Haugh An impossible question! My first and only Quetzal was magical. But I'd have to say Sandhill Cranes right now. I'm missing their migration down the Pacific Flyway and through California's Central Valley, which is going on as we speak. I'll be pining for a chance to watch them arrive again as they do every winter until at least next year.

How did you transition from speechwriting to writing your first book?

Christopher Haugh Law school... a very long story. But throughout my time as a speechwriter, I was also reading with an eye toward a second career. That meant pieces in the New Yorker, old Sports Illustrateds, Rolling Stone, and NYT Mag, as well as all the books I had neglected in college and grad school. I often failed to dress for the career I wanted, but I certainly could read for it.

How do you get inspired to write?

Christopher Haugh Other people's work--Ocean Vuong, Joanna Hogg, Katherine Boo--and art museums, especially on the road (which is also a great cure for writer's block).
