Just do it. Try it out, see what works for you and what doesn't. Beware of anyone telling you the 'right' or 'best' way to write but you can learn a lot from other writers.

I tend to find that being blocked is a symptom of not having a detailed enough plan. If I know what is meant to happen next, I can always carry on. For a first draft, what I write might not survive but it will advance the story as planned.
So if I find I'm stuck, I backtrack - look at where I'm headed and whether it's the right direction. If it is, I look to see what my characters would do in that situation (or often more usefully, what they would not do).
