The inspiration for Darkwood came during a summer of wildfires that gripped our valley a couple of years ago. Dense smoke blanketed our city for weeks on end. The opposite shore of the lake vanished in the smoky haze, health alerts were issued for anyone with a lung condition or asthma, and the stench of burning wood was inescapable.
Suddenly, I was ambushed by a writer’s “what if?”—one of those moments when a normal, everyday observation sparks your imagination.
What if there was another explanation for the wildfires? Something scientifically observable, but initiated by a sinister intelligence from outside our world? What if the wildfires were only a symptom of something far worse?
I went home, opened my notebook, and jotted down what would become the opening paragraph of Darkwood.
