Philip Haagsma I love stories: films, series, books, poetry, songs. When a story engrosses me, through comedy, through wonder or through heartbreak, I feel like I'm where I belong. The best part of being a writer is being able to engross myself in the exact kind of story I'd love, and hopefully I can do the same for someone else.
Philip Haagsma Sometimes the block for me is that the tap I'm trying to turn on isn't flowing: in that scenario, I'll just try writing something else and coming back later. If I can't get myself writing at all, I just sit down and try to brute force it. As unpleasant as it sounds, writing anything at all (whether I hate it or not) can help me see what I don't want to do. Then I just start it again with this newfound knowledge, sometimes over and over again until I feel a spark or a new idea comes to mind.
Philip Haagsma My track record is short, though I think it's important to be yourself and have fun with it. I do my best to keep myself loose and free as well as to not take myself too seriously. I laugh and cringe reading things I wrote many years ago just the same as I laugh and cringe reading things I wrote yesterday. At the end of the day, you just have to write what only you could write.
Philip Haagsma Right now I'm writing my second novel, which is fantasy. All I'll say right now is that it's fantasy, I've had the idea for around six years now and it's completely unrelated to my debut novel.
Philip Haagsma My biggest inspiration is probably listening to music. When a song grabs a hold of me the right way, it can send me into my best imaginative space. Reading or watching something is always good: just hearing another voice helps deepen my own and usually spawns new ideas.
Philip Haagsma Mostly a childhood deeply influenced by fantasy of all sorts: I was always trying to adapt the stories I loved into my own versions. Now I'm off on an attempt to create my own fantastical world and story.
