I wanted to write an apocalypse book but also wanted it to differ from the norm. My love for nature was a big inspiration for my book and finding something that would be more natural that could drive people to act a certain way like a parasite you see in ants among other insects. I have a fascination for fungus as well and that played a part in the deformities of the infected.
I loved watching my husband play game called The Last of Us. It had some influence as well.
