I wanted to write a book series that would feature a compelling set of characters based on some of the more interesting, dynamic and colorful people in my life. I imagined them in a crime story, where the lead composite characters, Donald Alexander and Kwame Mills, would be victimized, jeapordized but always win.

Earlier in life I would be inspired by life and events, I enjoyed describing a room, setting or something that I found funny to share with friends. Now my inspiration is feedback from readers of my works who are curious about my characters particularly those in The Publisher’s Dilemma, they want to see more from them, and what will happen with them in future works.

Keep writing and thinking. Read, write and dream about writing. Just keep writing.

Storytelling is fun. Having ideas and just being able to express them in ways that capture people attention and imagination and make them smile.

I typically have a format that I work from, the incident, character development, secondary and tertiary plot twists and turns, dramatic ending and freelance which . means I just let my mind go and write freely. So if I am stuck in one place, I move to another part of the book and try to write from there. When my mind is not focused, I take a walk and it often frees up my thinking.

The dirt road took us into the center of town, it was old and dusty, and looked like an old west ghost town with a ramshackle broken down hotel and the hotel like the bank, grocery store, police department and every other building in town had our last name on it, Blakeney. We were there for Aunt Hattie's funeral but as we put the car in park, I told my Dad and Mom to look across the street as I couldn't believe it, there was Aunt Hattie, she saw us and yelled "Get out of here, go Blakeneyville is the pit of hell, if you turn the car off you'll be cast into the fiery furnance."

I'm writing now and I try not to read when writing to keep my imagination clear. I should be finished with the second book in the series by late Spring so I'm excited to reread all of James Baldwin's works. If Beale Street Could Talk, Go Tell It On The Mountain and Notes of A Native Son. Baldwin to me is a national treasure and so always interested in him, his thinking, his challenges and conflicts and his wordsmith.
