I haven't had that problem so far. My way of working towards a new story is to gather every single thought and idea that pops into my head on paper on into a notepad on my phone (that way you never forget an idea). Eventually all these ideas and thoughts gel into a general storyline from which I can just add details. Hopefully I'll never have to deal with writer's block, but if I ever do and find a way around it, I'll update this answer! ;)

Reaching people you never would have met otherwise in your life. I've had emails from readers from all over the planet, been contacted by local politicians and newspapers and even been recognized on the street (which is a new and strange feeling for me as I never aspired to be in the spotlight).

Set designated time slots in your weekly schedule for reasearch/writing. Otherwise, it'll never get done as something else will inevitably get in the way. Find a quiet place (don't try to write a book at Starbucks, it'll never work), free from distractions (lock yourself in your office, or at the library) and stick to your program, just like working out.

The inspiration was always there, being an avid reader. The problem is always finding an idea, a story that would interest readers. Once you have an idea, a gripping outline that you know will garner interest, you just need to find the time to get it done.

The idea started forming while I was traveling back and forth between Montreal and Philly. My wife was working in Philly full time but I didn't have a job over there since I was still teaching full time back in Montreal. So whenever I was in Philly I would spend my days wandering around town, taking in the sights and sounds. I started daydreaming and putting down all these ideas on paper. The project laid dormant for a while and I picked it back up during my parental leave.
