The freedom to create a world that is all your own. I love the first draft phase, where it's just me and my characters in the quiet morning hours. I never plot or outline. I let the characters speak to me, tell me their stories. Discovering that is the most exhilarating part of the process.

So many places! I have a soft spot for the 1950s and 1960's. I would love to write a dark comedy set in that era one day. But if I had to choose, I'm going with Outlander. My family is Scottish and we travel there as often as we can. My father was born in Edinburgh and I think I have a mystical connection to it. There's something about the rolling hills, the bagpipes, the kilts. The warm humor and sharp wit. I love everything about it.

Lots and lots of historical fiction. I'm excited to read more Sue Monk Kidd, Jojo Moyes, and Colson Whitehead. Currently reading The Nightingale and up next is The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek.

Write freely and write often. I always write for myself. I write what feels good to me and what I need to feel. When you write towards what you think people want to read, it is hard to get an authenticity to it. Be real and raw and honest, and the rest will happen naturally.

Beautiful Rebel- a historical fiction novel set in 17th century France. It is a magnificent true story about brave women who defied the constraints of poverty, loss and social standing, finding power in unexpected places. I can't wait to share it with you! COming in 2020.

I always hit the trail when I get writers block. There are so many amazing hiking trails in Central Oregon, and being out amongst the trees and along the river always clears up my mind and I find stories and characters feel that they are speaking to me when I am out there. It works every time!
