Jane Fulkerson Don't be intimidated by the "task" of writing. Get to know the characters you are writing about and trust them to take care of the story. You just write it down. There is a good deal of trust involved here, but once you trust your characters, anything is possible.
Jane Fulkerson I believe the best part of being a writer is it allows you to enter another world and meet characters you otherwise would never have met. You get to know them and become part of their lives. What surprised me - writing my first book - was how emotionally involved and protective I became of the characters that had presented themselves to me.
Jane Fulkerson Hmmmmmm. The large slavering bear tore open the tent and ate everyone inside. He didn't have to eat again for a month.
Jane Fulkerson I wouldn't travel to a fictional book world. I would time travel to 1270s - early 1300's to Scotland and interview people like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. I'd like to just spend some time sitting around their campfires and get the real scoop on what their lives were like.
Jane Fulkerson I'm sure that all the books I read this coming summer will have to do with Civil War History, in preparation for my next book. I'll be doing a lot of research.
Jane Fulkerson I wanted to write a book about people I knew - who were real to me. I began writing about the O'Neal and Sullivan families and after two or three chapters, the characters basically said to me, "Jane, we'll take care of the story, you just write it down." From then on, I simply observed what they were doing and wrote. There were days when I'd stop writing for the day and observe, "Didn't see that coming."
