Ask the Author: Jeff Berney

“I don’t believe anyone is purely good or purely evil, so my characters never are. My debut novel, “A Killer Secret,” is a twisted, twisty tale of revenge, lust, and murder. Ask me anything.” Jeff Berney

Jeff Berney I wish my life was exciting enough to provide the plot for a book! I lead a pretty low-key life in all honesty, especially since the pandemic hit. I will tell you that I do intersperse a lot of personal tidbits into my stories. They may not drive the plot forward, but they help make my imagined worlds a little more real for me as I write. And I like the idea of sprinkling in Easter eggs others may find years later.
Jeff Berney Right now I’m working on my second novel. It’s a story about love and loss in small towns. It’ll have a deeper cast of characters than my first novel did, but it will still be a twisted, twisty psychological thriller that explores the idea that no one is truly evil or purely good.
Jeff Berney I'm always inspired by the world around me. I keep an eye out for interesting news stories. I listen to people's tales from their own lives. And I think about my own misadventures and experiences. Then I take bits and pieces and move them around until I've created something new. From there, I just let the characters take over and see what they come up with.
Jeff Berney I'm not sure actually. Writing is just a part of me. It always has been. It's my outlet. I've never thought of it as a job or a chore, although I have always made my living as a writer. I hate to be so cliche as to say it is my calling, but it really is the thing I do the best.
Jeff Berney I honestly don't believe in writer's block. When I'm stuck on one area of a story I try to move to another. And most times I just force myself to write even if I'm not in the mood. Even if the words that spring from my fingers aren't ready for prime time, at least they're helping to move my story forward.
Jeff Berney I thought I was alone. Then the kids woke up.
Jeff Berney That's tough. Are we talking a completely fictional world or a fictional version of this world? As a kid, I always imagined being part of the world Robert Asprin in his Myth-Adventures series. And I would love to be a member of the Goonies. I totally relate to Data, but in a nerdy white kid way. And then there is the land of Lewis Carroll and Charles Dickens. And Stephen King. I'd love to be able to use the Shining and hang with Danny. (As a kid, not as an adult. Adult Danny is a killjoy.) I could go on and on. Couldn't you?
