J.R. Snyder I'm a pretty big history nerd, and I'm particularly interested in the Medieval Period through the Age of Exploration so that inspired the general era I wrote about. The idea for Asher and Aethon's characters came to me as I was riding my bike home from work on a foggy day and saw a bunch of crows flying around. The trip felt kind of spooky and magical, and the crows inspired Aethon. Subsequent bike rides kind of fleshed out their characters and from there I actually started writing the story.
J.R. Snyder I spend a lot of time at my day job listening to stories and podcasts, usually about folklore or mythology, that always get me excited to write. When I'm actually writing, I usually listen to music and sit alone so I can focus.
J.R. Snyder I'm currently writing a series of short stories about Asher Norwood and the Sin Eater world that will be published as a collection next year. Looking beyond that, I have a full length Sin Eater novel (potentially a series depending on how it shapes up) that I'm slowly picking at.
J.R. Snyder I've never really struggled too much with writer's block long term. I plan out my stories pretty carefully beforehand, so when I hit a blocking point, I'll just refer to my outline. If all else fails, I usually go to a whiteboard and talk through the plot with my wife until she comes up with a brilliant idea.
