All of my ideas come from my imagination based on a few past experiences, particularly the Western landscape. On horseback, I have been into the back country, have seen the wild and rugged mountains that I describe in my novels. But I make up the characters, the incidents, the conflicts, and the emotions.

I taught writing for years. When teaching, I wrote along with my students. Eventually, I wrote poetry, essays, and finally, began writing fiction. I had a dream one night about an incident that happened in my past. On waking the next morning, I decided I needed to consider it closer. After researching, I ended up on another path entirely different. That's how I started my first novel. Jo

I don't have writer's block. My characters and story pull me forward into their stories. I left them tell me what they are doing and what they want to do. I know, that's a little esoteric, but that's how I approach my writing. Jo
