The ability to set your own schedule. Of course the schedule must include a "usual" time for writing otherwise you can drift for days or weeks letting ideas float around in the back of your mind and using that to justify the passing time. Set your schedule, but you're not a writer unless you're writing (not my quote) so sit down every day and get at it.

I've just received an acceptance from a publisher for my Vietnam memoir, "Shrapnel Wounds" and, per the editor's instructions, I'm busy adding some sections and rewriting others. There is a lot of motivation when you know for sure that you're just a few months away from publication.

Not very well I think. Basically I just go back to reading and try to scarf up as many books by people whose stuff I like. I like John Connolly a lot and go back and look at some of this stuff. I set short term goals such as playing with the outline one week and then going over the characters the next week and just hope the muse will turn up soon.

That is both easy and hard. Easy as the answer is start writing, and write and write and write. Put short pieces on your computer, develop a theme, explore your local for sites and themes. Easy to say. Hard to do, but get started. Do it consistently and someday, some cloth will start to rise from all that you've been weaving.

I worked as a volunteer at a street kids foundation in Bangkok for 14 years. The home was in a very poor neighborhood and the slaughterhouse was nearby. One day, pondering where to put the body to be found opening my next adventure the thought just ocurred to me, "what if a human body was found in the slaughterhouse one morning?"
After that I just ran with it.
